Choosing 2 images to add to my portfolio

I very recently had the opportunity to explore and shoot the Annie Lytle school, originally called School House Number Four.  In the beginning School Four was a wooden frame school house built in 1891. The wooden building was deemed unstable as well as a fire hazard, that's when construction began on it's full brick structure in 1917, making room for it's expansive corridors that were completed in 1918. This school was at one time a majestic brick structure overlooking Riverside Park. That is until they began erecting I-95 in the late 1950's which led to the closing of the school  in 1960.  It was condemned and completely abandoned in 1971. Time has taken a severe toll on this once lavish school. Vandalism has overtaken the school with trash, and graffiti.  There was then a fire in October of 1999 that  hollowed out the roof of the Auditorium. This building has since been saved by Historical Societies after public protest to build condominiums in its place. Since then the old school building sits there in utter disrepair.  Urban legends surround the structure, including an eccentric janitor that murdered children, suicidal faculty members, a cannibalistic principal, and a boiler room eruption, none of which can be proven. It has been labeled "The most haunted place in Jacksonville." I had no paranormal experiences inside the school, just an odd creepy energy lingering from the past. I did however capture some truly amazing images from the inside of this forgotten structure that once accommodated many children just excited to go there and learn from their mentors. Here are the two images I am presenting in class tonight. This was one of the funnest photo shoots I have ever done, I hope someday soon that I can revisit this site and continue my urban exploration.

High Dynamic Range Reflections

I don't know if I mentioned that I am also taking Advanced Digital Photography this semester, but I thought I would share a new technique that we were assigned this week in that class also.  With this assignment we had to use auto exposure bracketing, which is basically taking a series of 3 photographs. One is taken two F stops under, the second is taken normally, and finally the third is taken 2 F stops over. The 3 images are then combined in camera Raw, and edited in CS6. One was edited realistic, and the other hyperrealistic. I used shallow depth of field and form in my realistic image to make it more interesting as well as color. In my hyperreal image I used light and color to give it a really warm feeling.  I really enjoyed this assignment, and I am looking forward to using this technique in the future when I have time.  I hope you like them, Cyndy

This next image is my Sunset assignment that I shot over the Horizon. I really love the warm glow that it has, and I hope it makes you smile too! Until next time, Ciao!

Relief

Well I must say that last night presenting my portfolio ideas to my classmates and instructor was quite terrifying! Pheww, thank Goodness that is over with! I have come up with my Portfolio title as of now though, and my images will portray urban abstract instead of urban decay. I am really excited to get to work on some of the ideas I have. Next week I am going to have the opportunity to shoot in Jacksonville which has some pretty amazing scenery for my project! I also really want to get down to Miami and photograph the abandoned  amphitheatre there on the water front. It is covered in graffiti and is quite weather beaten, I have been dying to get down there! So far, so good this semester, I am really having fun, and learning so much. I suppose I should show you you some photos I took this week, completely unrealated to any assignments, just for fun! I shot them in downtown Melbourne, I hope you enjoy them. Have a great week! Cyndy

Getting Creative

My advanced digital photography teacher encourages us to play with the different settings on our cameras, and to challenge ourselves to try new things. These are some abstract and reflection images I shot in the past couple weeks that I thought came out pretty interesting, hope you like them too!

Portfolio assignment 2 Visual Art Journaling

This the image that I chose for my assignment this week. I shot nearly 200 photo's yesterday afternoon, but decided to use this one because I liked the blur effect, as well as the peaceful, and tranquil feel of the overall image with the quote I chose before hand. I think the quote really brings my image to life, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Have a fantastic week everyone! Cyndy

My Portfolio Website Review

  • This site features the work of Tara Whitney "Portrait Photographer". I enjoy her work because not only is it beautiful, but she  realizes that life isn't flawless. Tara encourages her clients to show up as they are, and leave the flawless clothes and hair at home, and just have fun! She is spontaneous and real, kinda like me!
  • The 5 characteristics of her portfolio that I find most appealing are composition, inspiration, lighting, unique perspective, and  her work tells a story. I love that you can look at her images and feel the emotion that she was able to capture.
  • I don't think that I would change a thing about her work. On her website itself I would however remove the music that plays, which is a pet peeve of mine. To me it just seems unnecessary. Her work speaks for itself. You can really feel the sillyness, the closeness, and the love shown through her images.
  • I envision my final photography portfolio to be unique. I want to do something that will challenge me.  I plan to have my portfolio make a statement.
  • I plan on making my portfolio stand out by putting myself into my work, and telling a unique story.

Below is the link to a beautiful family video she created.

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” – Elliott Erwitt
